Selenium (Java) Automation Testing Tutorial

Once you've written the same manual test case for the tenth time, you understand exactly why automation exists. Selenium WebDriver is the most widely used browser automation tool in QA, and pairing it with Java is one of the most common — and most hired-for — combinations in the industry. This track covers 23 lessons: WebDriver fundamentals, every locator strategy you'll actually use, waits (the #1 source of flaky tests when done wrong), TestNG as your test framework, and the Page Object Model — the design pattern real automation frameworks are built on. Throughout, we automate a hypothetical RecipeBox web app: logging in, adding a recipe, and searching the recipe list.

Prerequisite: This track assumes basic Java syntax (classes, methods, loops). If that's shaky, a quick pass through the Java track first will make this much smoother.

When to Automate (and When Not To)

Good fit for automationBetter left manual
Regression suite you run every releaseBrand-new feature that's still changing daily
Repetitive, well-defined steps (login, checkout)Exploratory, "what if the user does something weird" testing
Needs to run often, unattended (CI pipeline)One-off test you'll never run again
Data-driven checks across many input combinationsVisual/UX judgment calls ("does this look right?")

A Quick Look Ahead

Example: Logging Into RecipeBox and Adding a Recipe

WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
driver.get("https://recipebox.example.com/login");

driver.findElement(By.id("email")).sendKeys("tester@example.com");
driver.findElement(By.id("password")).sendKeys("Test@1234");
driver.findElement(By.id("loginBtn")).click();

// Now add a recipe
driver.findElement(By.id("addRecipeBtn")).click();
driver.findElement(By.id("recipeTitle")).sendKeys("Paneer Butter Masala");
driver.findElement(By.id("saveRecipeBtn")).click();
Note: This is real, runnable Selenium/Java code — but RecipeBox's web app doesn't actually exist as a live site on this server, so you won't see it execute here. Follow along against any real login form (or a practice site we'll point you to) once we get past setup.
